The University of Zagreb Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering is the coordinator of the project ” Flexible and smart energy systems to decarbonize buildings” (hrv. Fleksibilni i pametni energetski sustavi za dekarbonizaciju zgrada”), which is part of a bilateral initiative within priority area Energy and climate change financed and supported by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants. The Norwegian partner is SINTEF Energy Research from Trondheim.
The aim of the project “Flexible and Smart Energy System for Building Decarbonization” is to exchange knowledge and experiences in the field of environmentally friendly technologies, building decarbonization, innovative energy technologies, and to establish long-term research, educational, and technical cooperation.
Through various activities such as study visits, meetings, and expert workshops, SINTEF Energy Research and SINTEF Community has shared its expertise with the University of Zagreb Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering on the implementation of the ZEB (Zero Emission Buildings) concept and smart building concepts they have applied in their ZEB laboratory in Trondheim.
The University of Zagreb Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering has shared its experiences in energy service models and policy development, with a particular emphasis on the modernization and decarbonization activities of the faculty building in Varaždin. Students of the Geotechnical Faculty have also actively participated in various activities, and through a series of online guest lectures by researchers from SINTEF, this project has improved teaching activities at the faculty.
Two technical solutions for the building of the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering were developed through this project. The “Buildings Energy Retrofit and Decarbonization Analysis Report” provides an analysis and solution proposal for replacing the energy system of the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering building, and the “Buildings Smart Energy Concept Analysis Report” provides proposals for the installation of smart systems in the building.
The results of this project have prepared analytical activities for the development of future projects aimed at the energy renovation of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering building, which will significantly reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and impact on climate change.
