Hrvatski savjet za zelenu gradnju
Today, in Europe, sustainable construction emerges as a pivotal opportunity for fostering sustainable growth, both nationally and globally.
It encapsulates a comprehensive, holistic approach encompassing the design, execution, upkeep, utilization, administration, and refurbishment of buildings grounded in sustainability principles.
The green building certificate is one of the ways to express your commitment to sustainable development and business practices based on environmental awareness, social responsibility and efficient use of resources throughout the building’s life cycle.
Notably, buildings within the European Union account for approximately 45% of energy consumption and generate nearly 40% of greenhouse gases. Furthermore, they contribute to 35% of construction material usage and a similar percentage of waste production in the construction sector.
Over the years, the Green Building Council Croatia – GBC Croatia has been dedicated to enlightening both the general and specialized public about the merits of sustainable construction and the adoption of international certifications.
Currently underway is the development and implementation of the DGNB system tailored to the Croatian market, with GBC serving as the official DGNB System and Academy Partner.

The DGNB certification system represents a German framework for project planning and optimization, characterized by a holistic approach encompassing not only the ecological aspects of buildings, neighborhoods, or interiors but also equally weighing the social and economic facets.
Distinguished as the most advanced global system due to its inclusive approach, it stands as the sole certification that grants equal significance to both economic and environmental aspects of sustainable structures.
Furthermore, it aligns with EU regulations and standards, eliminating the need for documentation harmonization for the European market.
In sync with the European Taxonomy Regulation, it serves as a classification framework and criteria for evaluating the sustainability of future economic endeavors. This holds particular significance for investors, presenting construction in a lower financial risk and interest rate, thereby liberating capital for further investments.
Differentiating from all other certifications, the DGNB system assesses the entire lifecycle of buildings, considering planning, construction, use, and demolition (Life Cycle Assessment – LCA), alongside evaluating life cycle costs (Life Cycle Cost – LCC).
