The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment is now open for recruitment
We are calling upon companies, cities, states and regions to take urgent, courageous and immediate climate action towards decarbonising the built environment.
What is the Commitment?
The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment challenges companies, cities, states and regions to reach Net Zero operating emissions in their portfolios by 2030, and to advocate for all buildings to be Net Zero in operation by 2050.
By setting ambitious ‘absolute’ targets, the Commitment aims to maximise the chances of limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees by drastically reducing operating emissions from buildings.
It uniquely provides a framework for organisations to develop globally ambitious yet locally relevant, flexible and universally viable solutions for their portfolio to both reduce energy demand and achieve net zero carbon emissions. The Commitment will be one of three pathways available to join EP100.
We are now looking for climate leaders to join the Commitment’s first three signatories and demonstrate their commitment to net zero carbon buildings.
Who is involved?
WorldGBC developed the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment under EP100, led by the The Climate Group in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy as a climate action under the We Mean Businesscoalition. This approach benefits from the extensive knowledge and experience of existing campaigns from The Climate Group, including EP100 and RE100, and provides a new offering specific to the global real estate sector.
The Commitment was developed using the guiding principles of the Advancing Net Zero Framework in conjunction with focused and dedicated industry expertise coming from both within the Green Building Council community and wider industry stakeholders. After a thorough and extensive development process, the Commitment was released for external consultation to C40 Cities, The Climate Group’s Under 2 coalition States and Regions, GBCs and their members, and the WorldGBC Corporate Advisory Board before being released for information and opened to recruitment at WorldGBC’s Congress in Toronto on 6 June 2018.
“The Commitment aims to maximise the chances of limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees by drastically reducing operating emissions from buildings.”
When will it be launched?
The Commitment will be officially launched at the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco, United States of America (12-14 September 2018). The Summit will bring together leaders to showcase climate action taking place around the world, and inspire deeper commitments from industry and national governments, in support of the Paris Agreement. It is, therefore, the perfect opportunity for organisations to position themselves as future leaders in industry.
Why the Commitment?
While there are several existing commitments to which organisations can currently sign-up to demonstrate action against climate change, this Commitment would be unique in positioning building performance as a core component of strategy, and ensure full alignment with the ambitions and requirements of the Paris Agreement. The Commitment sets a level of ambition that will create unprecedented demand, stimulating market to deliver net zero carbon buildings at scale.
The Commitment allows organisations, to align with recognised and industry leading local third-party certification schemes/reporting mechanisms, removing the need for undergoing additional assurance processes, and provides geographically relevant prescriptive pathways for meeting the energy efficiency requirements of the Advancing Net Zero Framework.
Currently, several member Green Building Councils participating in the Advancing Net Zero global project and other organisations around the world provide (or are developing) asset and portfolio level tools to address the challenges of achieving a carbon neutral environment, which can provide viable quality assured pathways for contributing towards the aims of this Commitment.
